GIF participated in the Egmont Group Plenary 2024

The 30th Egmont Group Plenary was held from 2 to 7 July 2024 in Paris, France. The Director and staffs of the Financial Intelligence Office (GIF) of the Unitary Police Service participated in the meeting as a member of the Egmont Group.

The theme of this Plenary is “The Next Generation FIU”. The Plenary focused on the adaptations required by FIUs in the coming decade, with a number of issues being discussed in depth, including developing the future workforce, how to use new technologies and the role of FIUs in addressing emerging crime types. GIF representatives participated in the Egmont Group Working Group Meetings, Regional Group meeting, Head of FIU meeting and the Plenary. During the Asia and Pacific Regional Group meeting, the representative of GIF shared the experience on the restructuring process with the members, in particular, the relevant laws and regulations on the restructuring and emphasized that the GIF, as a technically and operationally independent organic unit within the Unitary Police Service, would continue to carry out its legal functions and further strengthen the co-operation between GIF and law enforcement agencies with a view to further enhance the effectiveness of preventing and combating the criminal activities relating to ML/TF/PF crimes.

The Egmont Group aims to promote international co-operation, especially in the areas of financial intelligence exchange, training and sharing of expertise among all members. Currently, financial intelligence units from more than 170 jurisdictions are members of the Egmont Group. By participating in the above mentioned meetings, GIF representatives enhanced their understanding of emerging crime trends, acknowledged the prior need to formulate comprehensive strategies to address the threats posed by the present and future digital and environmental transitions. During the Plenary, GIF also negotiated the feasibility of bilateral intelligence exchange with several financial intelligence units, and strive to promote cross-border financial intelligence exchange and international co-operation.
