The Executive Council has finalized the discussion on the Administrative Regulation regarding the "Revision of Administrative Regulation no. 6/1999 - Organization, competency and function of public departments and entities".
In order to comply with international standards on the legal and institutional framework for the fight against money laundering and terrorist financing, the Macao SAR Government established the Financial Intelligence Office (GIF) in 2006, responsible for the collection, analysis and dissemination of information relating to the reporting of suspected money laundering or terrorist financing transactions.
In view of the practical experiences accumulated over the years, and taking into consideration the recommendations of international organization on the mutual evaluation of the GIF in the past, the Macao SAR Government considers that the GIF should strengthen coordination with law enforcement agencies in the area of intelligence and information communication, so as to respond to the trend of transnational crime development and to better identify money laundering risks, thus further improving coordination in combating these specific crimes. Therefore, the administrative regulation on the "Revision to Administrative Regulation no. 6/1999 - Organization, competency and function of public department and entities" was prepared by the Macao SAR Government.
The revision proposes that the GIF should now operate under the hierarchy of the Secretary for Security. The change will enter into force the day after its publication.
